Acupuncture for Fertility: My Story and How We Support You

If you're trying to conceive and it isn't happening as quickly as you hoped, you already know how heavy each month can feel. The waiting, the tracking, the hope, the disappointment, and the well-meaning "just relax" advice from people who haven't been there. I know that feeling from the inside, because I went through it myself, years into my own practice.

My Story

I struggled to get pregnant. Anyone who has been through it knows it's more than a medical question. It touches your mood, your sleep, your relationships, and the way you feel about your own body. I had been practicing for a few years and worked with pregnant moms every day, and I still couldn't make it happen on my own timeline.

So I did what I had been offering my patients: I tried acupuncture for myself. And I got pregnant right away.

I want to be careful here, because I would never want my story to read as a promise. It's one person's experience, and I can't tell you why it worked when it did. It could have been the acupuncture, the stress relief, the timing, or a combination. What I can tell you is that it changed how I saw this work. I stopped thinking of acupuncture as just a tool for pain, and I saw how much it could support the whole person during one of the most emotional seasons of life.

How Dr. Venturino and I Learned Acupuncture Together

Acupuncture has been part of our story from the beginning. Dr. Crystal Venturino and I learned it together in chiropractic school, and Dr. Venturino was pregnant while we were studying. Practicing on each other, and learning how to adapt care for a changing body in real time, gave us a hands-on understanding of fertility and pregnancy support that you can't get from a textbook.

Today, we're both certified in acupuncture, and we both offer it for fertility support. Whichever of us you see, you'll be getting someone who has thought carefully about this and cares about doing it well.

How Acupuncture May Support Fertility

No one can promise you a pregnancy, and we won't. What acupuncture does well is support the things that make trying so hard: stress, poor sleep, irregular cycles, and tension in the body. Here's how.

  • Calming the stress response. Trying to conceive is stressful, and chronic stress affects sleep, mood, and your body's rhythms. Acupuncture helps many people shift out of "fight or flight" and into a calmer state.
  • Supporting relaxation and sleep. Many patients tell us they sleep better and feel less keyed up in the days after a session.
  • Supporting cycle regularity and awareness. Acupuncture is often used to support healthy menstrual cycles, and we'll talk through your cycle patterns with you. If you're dealing with irregular cycles or PCOS, see our post on PCOS and PMOS.
  • Easing pelvic and low back tension. Tension in the hips, pelvis, and low back is common, and combining acupuncture with gentle chiropractic care can address it.
  • Giving you a place to be supported. Fertility struggles can be isolating. Having dedicated time that's just about you matters more than people realize.

We Work With Your Care Team

Acupuncture is a complement to your medical care, never a replacement for it. If you're working with an OB, a midwife, a reproductive endocrinologist, or another fertility specialist, we want to be one more supportive part of your team, not a competing voice.

  • We ask about your plan. At your first visit, we'll go over your history, any diagnoses, your medications, and whether you're doing timed intercourse, IUI, IVF, or just starting out.
  • We work around your protocol. If you have retrievals, transfers, or monitoring appointments scheduled, we'll plan your visits around them.
  • We never ask you to change your medical care. Keep taking what your doctor prescribes and follow your specialist's guidance. Questions about medications or treatment decisions belong with them.
  • We're happy to coordinate. With your permission, we can communicate with your providers so everyone is on the same page.
  • We'll refer you out when needed. If something we hear in your history suggests you need further testing or evaluation, we'll tell you and point you to the right provider.

If You Get Pregnant

Acupuncture is safe during pregnancy when it's done by a trained provider, and it's something we're especially comfortable with. When Dr. Venturino and I were paired up to practice on each other in school, she was pregnant, so we learned how to care for a pregnant body in real time, together. Please tell us as soon as you find out, even before your first prenatal appointment. We'll adjust your care for pregnancy, and many patients continue with gentle acupuncture and prenatal chiropractic care with the approval of their OB or midwife. If you're curious what that looks like, our post on prenatal chiropractic care walks through it. Having the same team from preconception through pregnancy and postpartum is one of the things our patients tell us they value most.

What to Expect at Your First Visit

Your first appointment starts with a conversation, not a rushed intake form. We'll talk about your cycle, how long you've been trying, what you've already done, and how you're feeling emotionally. Then we'll explain what we recommend before any needles go in. Acupuncture needles are hair-thin, and most people find sessions deeply relaxing. If you're new to acupuncture, our Acupuncture 101 guide covers the basics.

Both Dr. Crystal Corona and Dr. Crystal Venturino offer acupuncture at our Land O' Lakes office.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can acupuncture help me get pregnant? No one can promise pregnancy, but acupuncture can be a real part of your plan. It supports the things that make trying so hard, like stress, sleep, relaxation, and cycle regularity, and it works alongside your medical care.

Can I do acupuncture while I'm seeing a fertility specialist or doing IUI or IVF? Many patients do. We'll ask about your protocol and timeline and work around it. We never ask you to change or skip anything your fertility specialist has recommended, and we're happy to coordinate with your care team.

When should I start acupuncture if I'm trying to conceive? There's no single right answer, but many people start a few weeks to a few months before trying or before a planned treatment cycle so they have time to settle into a routine. It's fine to begin whenever you're ready.

What happens if I get pregnant while receiving acupuncture? Let us know as soon as you find out, even before your first prenatal appointment. We'll adjust your care for pregnancy, and many patients continue with gentle acupuncture and prenatal chiropractic care with the approval of their OB or midwife.

Do both doctors offer acupuncture for fertility? Yes. Both Dr. Crystal Corona and Dr. Crystal Venturino are certified in acupuncture and offer fertility support at Grounded Wellness Chiropractic in Land O' Lakes.
